In the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic and countrywide lockdown, many of the female sex workers in Bangladesh are facing a serious crisis. A HARC survey found that almost all of the sex workers in Bangladesh have lost their incomes, surviving on very little at the moment. This pandemic is not only leaving them with a serious shortage in financial resources for their basic needs but also causing psychological implications as they are constantly worried about where their next meal will come from! HARC received numerous calls from sex workers genuinely asking for help as they don’t have any saved income left.
The HARC survey clearly indicated that at this point the basic need of the sex workers is food as they have no income or very little income. The sex workers mentioned that as soon as the lockdown went into effect, their number of clients came down to zero almost immediately.
